these cars were once special edition rentals that could only be rented thru the Hertz car-rental company, however, they were plagued by a couple issues:
1st. they were taken to local drag strips to be raced.
2nd. people later learned that they could just rent the cars, and have the engines taken out, then replaced with a smaller, less powerful engine, but Hertz rarely checked the engines to make sure they hadn't been stolen, and many lost their original value.

But all the way till 1969 there were special mustangs built for Hertz, although fewer and fewer were made each year.
